Sree Siddaganga Math has been running a Gurukula started by SreeSreeUddanaSwamiji in 1917 and nurtured in a big way by Dr. SreeSreeSivakumaraSwamiji, a centenarian. Siddaganga Gurukula is providing free food, education and accommodation to more than 10,500 students without any discrimination of caste, creed or community. Sree Siddaganga Math is also supporting poor students for their fees, clothing and other needy expenses. SreeSreeSivakumaraSwamiji has also founded and nurtured Sree Siddaganga Education Society which is running 125 educational institutions (schools and colleges) mostly in rural Karnataka. SreeSiddalingaSwamiji, the President of Sree Siddaganga Math has continued the services initiated and nurtured by His Gurus.
Siddaganga Institute of Technology (SIT) was established in the year 1963 and is one among these 125 institutions. SIT is offering 13 undergraduate programmes and 12 post graduate programmes. More than 4000 students are currently pursuing their studies in the institute. 15 departments of the institute are recognized as Research Centres by Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum. 187 Research scholars are pursuing Ph.D. programme in these centres. University Grants Commission, New Delhi, Government of Karnataka and Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi have granted autonomous status to our institute from the academic year 2007-08.
The institute has experienced, qualified and devoted faculty members (about 310) and 139 of them have Ph.D. from reputed institutions like IISc, Bangalore, IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Guwahati and others. Another 68 of our faculty members are pursuing Ph.D. programme at various reputed institutions
UFaculty members have considered research as an integral part of teaching and are actively engaged in research and pursuing sponsored research projects from DRDO, DST, ISRO, AICTE, VGST and others, the total funding being Rs.100 million. The research work and project works carried out by the faculty and students has resulted in good publications in conferences and refereed journals. The Government of Karnataka has honoured Siddaganga Institute of Technology, Tumkur with State Environment Protection Award for the year 2011-12 in recognition of excellent performance of S.I.T. Tumakuru in respect of environment protection. Along with the citation, the college has also received a cash award of Rupees one lakh.
S.I.T. is one among the nine engineering colleges across the state selected by the Department of IT, BT & ST, Government of Karnataka for establishing New Age Incubation Centre in Information & Communication Technology.
